Dear Parents,
Your second grade child and the other students are learning about functions of animal parts in our science class. We are learning about all different kinds of animals.
I have found a few activities for you and your child to have fun with. This science conept is all part of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) that we are required to teach the students. The TEKS for this activity is §112.4. Science, Grade 2.6) The student is expected to observe and record the functions of animal parts. A link to the TEKS can be found at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter112/ch112a.html#112.3
I hope the activites will be helpful in helping your child gain more knowlege about animal parts. I have found three activites for you and your child to have fun with.
The first activity is at the Kaboose website. It is called Animal Spot. It is where your child can match the animals with the horns of animals. Once your child has matched the animal and horn properly, there will be a description of the animals.

The second activity is where your child can build an animal using different body parts. This site is from the San Diego Zoo. When your child clicks on the body parts, it gives a description of what that body part does.

The third activity is also about your child building an animal with different body parts but it is quite different. The website is from the British Council for kids. In this activity, your child is given instructions on which body part to choose and must make the correct choice.

I hope your child will enjoy these activities and learning more about animal parts.
Until next time, Ms. Kephart
